"I thought all of the teams were amazing. The level of polo here is incredible. Everybody is well-mounted, and everybody hits the ball. It was so fun to test my skills out here; it pushes you to get better."
On the other hand, Megan Manubay, who started her polo career after a successful background in showjumping, took home the Silver Cup. Playing for Los Sauces La Monarquía with Colette Sandhu, Dayna Waechter, and Milagros Sánchez, Megan’s team secured a narrow 12-10 victory against La Ensenada Camp Polo, which included Suzanne Duncan, Juana Pando, Olivia Merlos, and Milly Hine. Megan’s journey from showjumping to high-level polo competition demonstrates the adaptability and determination of American women in the sport.
-Megan, how do you feel about winning the Silver Cup?
"I thought it was a great game. I'm so happy we won. It was tight the whole time. And then, you know, we're happy that we played well and came out on top. "
-Can you tell us more about your background?
"I grew up showjumping and I still do a little showjumping. And during the pandemic, I was looking for a way to meet new people. So I started taking polo lessons first in Cincinnati and then at Brandywine Polo Club. And then I just took off from there."
-How did you feel playing this tournament?
"I thought all of the teams were amazing. The level of polo here is incredible. It's like the fields are incredible. Everybody is well-mounted. Everybody hits the ball. Everybody can run. Everybody can back the ball. It's amazing. Everybody has great skills. They all ride you off so hard. It's so fun to test your skills out here because you feel like you have a lot to learn every time you go out there. It pushes you to get so much better. It was super fast. I felt it really fast. Yeah, it was very fast. Obviously, the fields are incredible, so the ball goes. It's really fun."
-How were your horses?
"My horses were good. It was our first tournament back this season, so they're all a little fresh. But they were great and so much fun to play."
-What's next for you?
"I will play the La Fija tournament in November. Then, we're going to play in Mexico and in Florida together with Coco as well. So we have a lot coming up. We have a whole season. I just came from Europe, now in Argentina and later in Mexico. La Monarquía World Tour!"
Both Tennyson and Megan’s performances in Argentina, playing alongside and against some of the best players in women’s polo, like Hazel Jackson and Lía Salvo, underline the rising strength of American women in the sport.
Their success is part of a larger movement, with 50% of polo players in the U.S. now women, and figures like Hope Arellano, with her 10-goal handicap, leading the charge. As American women continue to compete at the highest levels globally, their influence in international polo is only set to grow.
